NDI Krios

Handheld 3D Scanner

While Vicrascan, the predecessor to Krios, was the technological benchmark for handheld 3D scanning, it was in need of new technology features, ergonomic improvements, and an update to the design. Krios is based on real-time 3D stereo camera technology that measures, identifies, and maps electrode positions to an accuracy within 0.5 mm and repeatability of 0.1 mm.

Conceptual Direction

Our directive, and goal, was to bring Krios in-line with current neurodiagnostic equipment and maintain much of the existing electronics platform. Additionally, we wanted to develop a visual vocabulary that helped reduce the perceived volume, and spoke to Krios’ high precision.

Design Intent

We developed a design that started with a single gesture. The grip area was cut away from the overall form which achieved an aesthetic balance and even weight distribution. The curvature on the front was reversed from the former design to match the optical bench lenses and allowed for a much reduced volume. The CMF choices were centered around the intended relationship to medical devices and other products in the NDI family of measurement sciences products.

Mechanical Design

With a well defined set of 3D CAD files for the internal components, namely the optical bench, we developed an assembly strategy for low run silicone moulding. Working from the inside out and maintaining the design intent, we developed all of the mechanical interfaces between housings and electronics, ribs and bosses, wall thicknesses, and created documentation for the manufacturing partner to execute.
